The biggest mistake families make before a portrait session is trying to manufacture perfection. They dress the children in matching outfits, rehearse poses, and worry about everyone smiling at the same time. The result is tension, and tension shows in photographs.

The best family portraits happen when families forget the camera is there. A good photographer creates that environment: they talk to your children, they let things unfold at the children’s pace, and they watch constantly for the in-between moments, the shared look, the pile-on hug, the chase across the grass. My job is to be invisible enough that you forget I am there, but present enough to capture everything.

Outfit choices make a bigger impact than most families realise. A few principles that consistently work well:

• Coordinate, do not match exactly. Choose a palette of two or three tones and let each person wear something within that range. Earthy neutrals (cream, sage, terracotta, stone) work beautifully outdoors and do not date quickly.
• Comfort over formality. Children in stiff, uncomfortable clothes become grumpy children fast. Choose outfits they can move, sit and run in.
• Avoid bold logos or large prints. These distract from faces and make images feel visually busy.
• Think about texture. Linen, knitwear and denim all photograph beautifully outdoors and add visual warmth.

For most families with children under 10, I recommend a 90-minute outdoor session. This allows time for everyone to settle in, for children to warm up to the camera, for natural moments to develop, and for a few more composed portrait moments.

Rushing a session to 45 minutes often means everything feels pressured, and that pressure translates into the images. Give yourself time, and the photographs will reflect it.
