Maternity Photography in Cambridge: Celebrating Every Stage of Your Journey

Maternity photography, done well, changes that. It hides nothing and creates no illusion. It meets you where you are and shows how striking this stage of life looks from the outside. Many parents go on to book newborn photography in Cambridge once their baby arrives, so the two chapters sit well together.

The ideal time for maternity photographs is between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage the bump is unmistakably present and beautifully round, but most women still feel mobile and reasonably comfortable. Before 28 weeks the bump can sometimes appear ambiguous in photographs; after 36 weeks, comfort during longer sessions can become challenging.

Like newborn photography, booking early is important. If you know you want maternity photographs, book as soon as you reach your second trimester to secure your preferred date, photographer and location.

Both approaches produce extraordinary maternity photographs, and the choice largely comes down to personal preference and the kind of images you want.

Studio maternity photography creates a timeless, intimate atmosphere. With controlled lighting and a simple background, the focus is entirely on you and the bump. This style photographs beautifully in black and white, and the resulting images often have a fine art quality that looks stunning printed large for the nursery wall.

Outdoor maternity photography in Cambridge allows the landscape to become part of the story. The Cambridgeshire countryside, riverside meadows and beautiful architectural settings offer an extraordinary range of backdrops that add context, atmosphere and seasonal character.

Grantchester Meadows: long grass, wildflowers and willow trees create a soft, dreamy backdrop perfectly suited to the gentle, celebratory mood of maternity photography. A 20-minute walk from the city centre or accessible by punting on the Cam.

The Backs, Cambridge: the riverside path behind King’s, Clare and Queens’ Colleges offers one of the most beautiful settings in England, with morning light on the water and the college façades behind.

Wandlebury Country Park: woodland trails and open hilltop fields that work beautifully across all seasons. Autumn is particularly extraordinary here.

Clothing is something I discuss in detail with every client before their session, but here are the principles that guide me:

• Choose what makes you feel beautiful, not what you think you should wear. Some women feel most themselves in flowing dresses, others in fitted jeans and a simple top, others in a professional gown.
• Fitted works. Contrary to what many assume, form-fitting clothing often photographs more beautifully than oversized layers, because the shape of the bump is part of what makes the images powerful.
• Flowing works too. Maxi dresses in soft fabrics such as jersey, chiffon and linen drape beautifully outdoors and move well in light wind.
• Solid colours and subtle textures: avoid busy prints that compete with the bump and the setting.
• Your partner’s clothing: if your partner is joining, ask them to dress in complementary, harmonious tones rather than identical ones.

The most emotionally resonant maternity photographs often include the people who are waiting for this baby alongside you. Including a partner transforms a maternity session into a portrait of a growing family: the tenderness, anticipation and shared joy are written all over a couple’s faces when the camera is there to catch it.

Older siblings can be wonderful to include, particularly when they are old enough to understand what is happening. The real expressions of children touching a bump, pressing an ear to listen, or simply sitting quietly alongside a pregnant parent are among the most moving photographs any session can produce.

For some clients, maternity photography is explicitly an artistic project, something they want to print large and display as art in their home rather than just document for the album.
