How to prepare for a brand or product shoot
The best photo shoots are won before the camera comes out. A clear goal, a simple mood-board, a tight shot list and the right details on the day turn a good shoot into a great one. Here is how we help clients get ready, whatever they are shooting.

Start with the goal, not the camera
Before anything else, decide what the images are for. A product page, a paid-social campaign and a print brochure all need different framing, so naming the end use first shapes every decision that follows.
Jot down the feeling you want (clean and minimal, warm and editorial, bold and graphic) and who the images are speaking to. That single sentence keeps the whole shoot focused.
Build a simple mood-board
Eight to twelve reference images are plenty. Pull examples you love for lighting, colour, composition and styling, and a couple you dislike so the direction is unmistakable.
You do not need to be a designer. A shared folder or a Pinterest board is enough for us to lock the look before the day.
Write a shot list
List the must-have shots first: the hero image, the key angles, detail close-ups and any lifestyle or in-use frames. Then rank them, so if time runs short the important shots are already captured.
If images need space for text (a banner or hero section), note it. We will frame with that negative space built in.
Sort styling and props early
For products, bring clean, undamaged items, ideally a spare of each, plus any packaging. For people, plan wardrobe in advance and bring options.
Small details (surfaces, fabrics, brand colours, fresh flowers, the right glassware) are what make an image feel premium. We will advise on what to gather.
Plan the logistics
Confirm the location, timing and access, who needs to be on set, and how images will be approved afterwards. A relaxed, well-run day produces better work than a rushed one.
FAQs
- How far in advance should I plan a photo shoot?
- Around one to two weeks for a straightforward shoot, and longer for campaigns involving models, locations or many products. More lead time makes for a smoother day.
- What should I bring to a product shoot?
- Clean, undamaged products (a spare of each if possible), any packaging, your brand colours or guidelines, and a few reference images of looks you like.
- Do you help with planning, or do I do it myself?
- We guide the whole process. Mood-board, shot list and styling are part of how we work, so you are never planning alone. Start an enquiry and we will take it from there.
